a good enough excuse

well maybe it’s the shirts you buy me
or the superman curl that won’t go away
but i never feel like i’m quite all myself
when i walk out the door at the end of the day
it was never as simple as a pair of striped socks
or my faux nouveau pleather jacket in grey
you’ve always tried to make me look
like some j-bauer-eddie-crew storefront display
i’ve got the right shoes on tonight
the black ones with the buckles
they’re not so good for walking
better more for stumbles
it’s a good thing that i’m drinking
i can put them to their proper use
so open up another bottle
it’s a good enough excuse
i miss my closet full of polyester vibes
and the parachute pants from when i was ten
but i’ve heard the argument too many times
of synthetic demons and the dangers of vinyl sin
so if it wasn’t linen, cotton or a wool-type blend
i boxed it and dropped it at the goodwill annex
even my thin plastic rick springfield tie
i occasionally see it on some wino’s neck
i’ve got the right glasses on tonight
black frames with yellow lenses
they’re not so good for seeing
better more for pretenses
it’s a good thing that i’m smoking
i can put them to their proper use
so fire me up anothe stick
it’s a good enough excuse
the thought struck me once
that i could actually burn them
they wouldn’t slowly melt
like my former flea shop duds
but there seems to be no limit
on your visa, discover and mastercard
i’d soon find myself back
as the organic-clad stud
i’ve got the right girl out tonight
black eyes and tight little dress
she’s not so good for making love
better more for having sex
it’s a good thing that we’re leaving
i can put her to her proper use
so pass me my car keys
it’s a good enough excuse
